Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) eliminates ambiguities in engineering drawings and clearly conveys the designer’s intent. It ensures seamless communication between design, engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams across the entire organization, enabling them to work together effectively and efficiently. In today’s highly competitive business environment, proper application of GD&T helps companies significantly reduce manufacturing and inspection costs. 

This three-day course provides an in-depth look at the concepts in the ASME Y14.5-2009 Standard. It compares various geometric tolerancing concepts and discusses the application of advanced GD&T controls, including composite profile and composite position tolerances, through case studies and exercises. It also focuses on applying proper datum feature selection and geometric tolerance applications on detail parts based on the functional requirements while also considering the cost implications for final assembly. 

This course covers most of the geometric characteristic symbols used in mechanical drawings. Theoretical and practical concepts of each symbol are explained relative to design, tooling, production, and inspection. 

This course will:

  • Focus on the system and language of GD&T and the methods of applying it through case studies, examples and exercises
  • Cover the philosophies of how, when, and where to apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing along with tips for producing quality parts
  • Provide a solid grounding in the fundamentals of geometric tolerancing based on the ASME Y14.5-2009 Standard
  • Help participants understand the requirements of the ASME Y14.5-2009 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing Professional GDTP Technologist Level examination.

This course is designed for those who use the ASME Y14.5-2009 Dimensioning and Tolerancing Standard. It covers most of the geometric characteristic symbols used on mechanical drawings. 

Theoretical and practical concepts of each of the geometric characteristic symbols are explained relative to design, tooling, production and inspection. 

Parts of a directional-changes gear box are used as platforms for the geometric controls, including shafts, gears, bearings, keys, lip seals, castings, and threaded fasteners.
